A watch designed
to disappear.

In 1994, Lella and Massimo Vignelli — the designers behind the New York City Subway map — set out to make a watch with no visible case. Just time, floating in a halo of colour.

The designers

You already know their work.

If you've ever taken the New York City Subway, you've used a Vignelli design. Lella and Massimo Vignelli shaped the visual language of the twentieth century — the American Airlines identity, the NYC subway signage (with Bob Noorda), furniture, books, interiors.

Their philosophy was radical in its simplicity: "If you do it right, it will last forever."

In the 1990s they turned that philosophy to the wrist. The result is the Vignelli watch — still in production, unchanged, three decades later.

"I like design to be visually powerful, intellectually elegant, and above all timeless." Massimo Vignelli

The idea

Weightless by design.

"Our basic concept was to transform the watch into a weightless object," Lella Vignelli explained. "We designed a frame that covers the case and expands the glass of the face into a subtly coloured, interchangeable halo."

Look at a Vignelli from the front and the case vanishes. The dial appears to float inside a ring of colour. Look from the side and it's barely there.

In good company

Collected, published, worn.

Pierre Junod's designer watches caught the eye of New York's MoMA early on. The Vignelli line has been featured by Dezeen and is held in design collections worldwide. But the best place for one is a wrist.
